**New** A Guide to FNESC, FNSA and IAHLA for Education Coordinators

The First Nations Schools Association (FNSA)
is a non-partisan organization committed to promoting First Nations control of education, and to improving and supporting the development of quality and culturally appropriate education for First Nations students.

The FNSA is a registered society and charity that is directed by First Nations schools in BC.

In any given year, the FNSA leads research projects, provides networking and communications services, and strives to raise awareness about what makes First Nations schools unique. In recent years, it has worked with First Nations schools to develop new tools for gathering data about the schools and students, and to develop and implement new instruments for school assessment, among other resources.

FNSA Mission Statement

The First Nation Schools Association will collaborate with First Nation schools to create nurturing environments that develop learners' pride and competence in their First Nations language and heritage and will equip them to realize their full potential, within self-governing First Nations communities.

The Need for a FNSA

Throughout the past several years, a strong message has been sent by individuals and communities involved with or interested in First Nations education. That message has clearly identified the need for an organization dedicated to servicing First Nations schools, and to communicating and addressing their common concerns. An Association is needed to deal with their significant financial and information constraints, and to clarify the community and policy issues affecting First Nations schools.

Responding to the priorities which have been expressed, the FNSA is operated and directed by First Nations schools, and its primary objective is to facilitate improvements in the quality of education offered to First Nations students.
