Grade 10 – 12 Educators Summer Workshop

8 May 2025

August 18 – 19, 2025 | Vancouver, BC & Zoom Videoconference

Day 1: Supporting Student Attendance – What Educators Can Do
Day 2: Math and English Instruction Strategies

The First Nations Education Steering Committee and First Nations Schools Association are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for educators working in Grade 10 to 12 classrooms in First Nation schools on August 18 – 19, 2025. Adult educators may also find these sessions beneficial, but they will be specifically designed to provide strategies and resources for working with Grade 10 – 12 students.

Day One will be a full day workshop on what teachers and other educators can do in the classroom to support student attendance. On Day Two, participants can choose to attend a half-day session on either English or Math instruction in high school classrooms.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Day 1 – Support Student Attendance (G. 10 – 12)
Lauranne Hutton and Jenessa Loewen, FNESC Staff

Using the Attendance Counts materials and the Building Connections with Students Toolkit, participants will learn about strategies that can be used in the classroom to improve student attendance. Throughout the day, participants will be given the opportunity to develop a plan they can use to support student attendance from the start of the school year.

Day 2 – English and Math Instruction (2 sessions)

Educators can choose either workshop to learn about strategies and resources to teach high school English or Math courses. These sessions will be presented by Devon Hancock and Chantel McNabb, experienced teachers who are currently teaching in First Nation Schools.

  • English with Devon Hancock (9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Devon will introduce novel study resources that can be used to teach the English First Peoples grades 10 – 12 courses. Topics will include: exploring the concept of “text”, how curricular foundations can enhance teaching and learning, and ways students can demonstrate their learning beyond the written response.

  • Math with Chantel McNabb (9:00 am – 12:00 pm)

Chantel will share strategies and resources to increase classroom engagement and resilience through group problem solving, interactive lessons with technology, and assessment in high school Math.
