About the Event

The First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) and First Nations Schools Association (FNSA) are pleased to announce an exciting one-day, in-person professional development opportunity for staff in First Nations schools.  This one-day session will provide a full day of training on topics related to Language and Culture, Instruction and Special Education.

This is an in-person event but participants who are unable to attend in-person can attend virtually.

Participants may choose one of the following three workshops.

1. INSTRUCTION: MATHEMATICS – With Alice Keeler

  • Keynote – Mathematics and Learning Loss.
  • 8 mathematical practices and increasing critical thinking.
  • Hands-on practical mathematics exercises.
  • Goals for the year.

Alice Keeler is a high school math teacher, developer for schoolytics.com, Google Certified Innovator, Google Developer Expert, Microsoft Innovative Educator, author of 7 books including “Teaching Math with Google Apps.” and mom of 5. Alice regularly shares on her blog alicekeeler.com

Eligibility

  • Staff in First Nations schools are eligible to attend.
  • Space is limited and participants are encouraged to register early.
  • Registration deadline:  September 1, 2022 or when capacity is reached.

Registration – In Person

  • FNESC and FNSA will pay for the facility, presenter fees, breakfast and lunch during the event.  Schools will be responsible for paying the travel and accommodation and all food and incidentals related to travel to and from the event.  Registration may be limited, depending on interest.
  • Registration is free for this event and includes the full day session plus breakfast and lunch on September 23rd.

Schedule

  • Session 9:00am to 4:00pm.
  • For the in-person sessions, breakfast (8:00am) and lunch provided.

Health and Safety

  • To attend the event in person, participants will be required to present their BC Vaccine Card (electronic or print copy) showing they have received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine. Please refer to the Health and Safety Protocols below.

  • Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel, 7551 Westminster Highway, Richmond, BC.
  • Book accommodation by September 1st, 2022 for the negotiated rate of $265 per night, plus tax (single/double).

Health and Safety Protocols

The following Health and Safety protocols are intended to ensure the health and safety of participants and staff. These protocols may be updated at any time due to developments in the COVID-19 pandemic or as a result of changes to public health guidance. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.

Before Travel

We ask that participants who are feeling unwell stay home and not attend the event.

Proof of Vaccination (Required)

To attend the event, participants will be required to present their BC Vaccine Card (electronic or print copy) showing they have received two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine. Participants who are unable to present proof of vaccination will not be able to attend the event.

Masking

The decision to wear a mask beyond when it is recommended by public health is a personal one, based on individual preference.

We recommend that participants wear masks when not seated.

Social Distancing

The meeting room will be set up to allow for as much social distancing as possible.

We ask that participants do not change seats during the event.
