15 February 2022

Dear PSE Coordinators and IAHLA Member Institutes,

On February 9, 2022 there was a virtual town hall meeting with Dr. Bonnie Henry and Dr. Réka Gustafson to discuss current public health guidance for post-secondary.

Public health speakers at the town hall included representatives from the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, the BC Centre for Disease Control, the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, and BC’s COVID-19 immunization program. Participants included senior representatives from post-secondary institutions, Indigenous partners, post-secondary faculty and labour organizations, student associations, and private post-secondary institutions.

Key themes discussed at the town hall included the new transmission dynamics and risks of the Omicron variant, vaccinations as an effective tool for preventing serious illness, the importance of wearing comfortable and well-fitting masks, the rationale for returning to in-person learning, and the importance of staying home when feeling sick or feverish.
