First Nations Schools Fall Professional Development Day, November 15-16, Richmond

The First Nations Education Steering Committee and First Nations Schools Association are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for educators in First Nation schools on November 15-16, 2024. During this event, Jo Chrona and Shelley Moore will weave aspects of Indigenous knowledges and perspectives into effective teaching and learning using the First Peoples Principles of Learning with Inclusive Education to design for diversity, inclusion, and equity.

On day one of this session, Jo and Shelley will lead educators through activities and discussions to help better prepare them to teach all the students in their classrooms.

Day two will be a half-day session and is intended to provide participants with an opportunity to discuss their learning from the previous day with other educators working in First Nation schools. Breakfast will be provided and the session will end at 11:00 am.

Dr. Shelly Moore

Teacher, Researcher, Consultant, Storyteller

Dr. Shelley Moore is a highly sought-after inclusive education researcher, collaborator and storyteller, and has worked with school districts and community organizations throughout Canada and the United States. Her research has been featured at international conferences including the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC), the International Reading Association (IRA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), The American Education Research Association (AERA), and the Canadian Society for Studies in Education (CSSE).

Jo Chrona

Speaker, Education Consultant, Indigenous Education Advocate, Author

Jo Chrona’s professional experience includes over 25 years teaching in both K-12 (secondary grades) and post-secondary education, working as a Faculty Associate in Simon Fraser University’s (SFU) Teacher Education Program, an Advisor with the British Columbia (BC) Ministry of Education, and a Policy Analyst then Curriculum Manager, for the First Nations Education Steering Committee in BC. Over the past two decades, Jo has been involved in curriculum development and resource writing, professional learning through inquiry networks, and Indigenous education.

Schedule

9:00am to 4:00pm. Breakfast (8:00am) and lunch are provided. Breakfast (8:00am) on November 16th is an optional networking opportunity.

Travel Expenses

Please note that participants will be responsible for paying their own travel and accommodation expenses, as well as all food and incidentals related to travel to and from the event. FNESC and FNSA will pay for the facility, presenter fees, breakfast and lunch during the event

Health

Please stay home if you are feeling unwell. Only registered participants are eligible to attend. Family and friends cannot attend the event at any time, including for meals. The decision to attend in-person events is a personal one and it should be made in consideration of your individual risk factors and vulnerabilities.
